Dear parents

I am of the understanding that your child is learning or has learned English as his/her second language.  In the Snake River School District, a program is offered precisely for those students for whom English is not a first language.  This program is called ESL/LEP (English as a Second Language/Limited English Proficient) and those who participate receive extra help in learning English.

Not every student learning English as his/her second language qualifies for the ESL/LEP program.  There is an exam that I have to give to your child to find out his/her current English ability.  According to his/her score, I will know if he/she qualifies for my services.

Below  is a list of services that I am able to offer to those students that qualify for ESL/LEP:

1.         Translate or offer support in other ways in the regular classroom
2.         Take an ESL English class rather than a regular English class
3.         Take an ESL English class and a regular English class (high school only)
4.         I can monitor a student’s academic progress without giving any direct services
5.         Take an ESL English class as an extra hour to study and get homework done         (high school only)

As parents, you have specific rights by law.  Some of those rights are:

1.         Accept or reject the services offered for your child
2.         Suggest services other than those offered
3.         Have a meeting with school personnel to discuss an educational program for          your child
4.         Frequently receive information regarding your child’s educational progress

Upon entering the ESL/LEP program, your child will be re-evaluated yearly to determine if services need to continue to be offered.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call Keralyn Nelson at Snake River Junior High.                  684-3018
